Application
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to segregate waste based on waste type in an on-the-job environment.
It includes identifying and segregating waste at a range of plant sites.
It also includes contributing to the implementation of workplace policies and procedures, systems and plans, as well as recognising potential hazards and controlling risks.
This unit requires the ability to apply safe work practices while working with all types of waste.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Evidence of Performance
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include: |
asking questions cleaning and fitting personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with organisational requirements, manufacturer specifications and regulatory requirements conducting work practices safely and efficiently consulting with others as required facilitating: equipment cleaning and maintenance plant and equipment operations equipment selection handling waste non-conformances identifying potential risks and hazards for waste sorting and waste non-conformances identifying waste types and waste non-conformances labelling waste listening actively organising sorting receptacles/areas in designated areas organising work methodically providing information reading and interpreting: job sheets work requirements and safety data sheets (SDSs)/material safety data sheets (MSDSs) safe systems of work job safety and environmental analysis work method statements reporting on waste segregation outcomes segregating valuable resources in composite materials segregating waste types, including potentially hazardous waste selecting emergency and PPE storing PPE in accordance with workplace policies using emergency and PPE that includes: communications equipment eye protection such as goggles and protective glasses eyewash kit fire extinguishers first aid kit footwear gloves overalls and protective clothing working in a team environment. |
Evidence of Knowledge
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of: |
emergency response procedures emergency spill kits environmental issues and relevant regulations equipment and materials required to clean and maintain plant and equipment hazardous and dangerous goods how to measure and calculate volume and weight industry environmental standards and relevant legislation recycling procedures resource recovery options and procedures segregation methods for dangerous goods and chemical substances waste containment, segregation and disposal procedures waste disposal and recovery routes waste management issues, including: chemicals used in industry client requirements coding systems duty of care organisational requirements reporting requirements waste storage requirements waste management hierarchy waste non-conformances and waste non-conformance procedures waste types, streams and characteristics. |
Assessment Conditions
As a minimum, assessors must satisfy applicable regulatory requirements, which include requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment. Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions. Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate. Resources for assessment include: a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or simulations applicable documentation including workplace procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals relevant and appropriate materials, tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment currently used in industry. |
